The Dixie Chicks are an American country music trio. Sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire (neé Erwin) started the group with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy in 1989 in Dallas, Texas. Macy left the group in 1992, and Lynch was replaced with Natalie Maines in 1995.
They are currently the highest selling female musical group in history, according to RIAA Gold & Platinum album certifications.
The group aroused considerable controversy for publicly denouncing President George W. Bush and the imminent invasion of Iraq during the European leg of their Top of the World tour supporting Home. Many country music stations immediately pulled their music from the air, and the band received criticism from many corners of the media.
Dixie Chicks released their latest album Taking the Long Way on May 23, 2006. All fourteen tracks were co-written by the Dixie Chicks and produced by Rick Rubin. This album received five Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for “Not Ready to Make Nice,” and Album of the Year and Best Country Album. Rick Rubin also won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, for his work with the Chicks and for his production on Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium.
Current members are
Emily Robison: guitar, banjo, dobro, vocals
Natalie Maines: lead vocals, guitar, bass guitar
Martie Maguire: fiddle, mandolin, vocals

They're sooo awesome. They invited me backstage at their Halifax concert!! Awesome chicks ; ) And for the people who are saying that it isn't right that their speaking their minds... wtf?? It`s awesome that they stand up and do something like that. It isn`t like every late-night host isn`t making fun of the president every chance they get. I think it`s crazy that there was such a backlash in the first place. Regardless, they`ll always have fans if they keep recording awesome music!

I really don't like them, but Wide Open Spaces is a good CD. It's their best in my opinion. Basically because it has so much memories in it for me.

I agree with deeper....They've done nothing but improve with each album, and if you can't see the difference in saying "I'm ashamed of Bush" and "I hate all Muslims," then I really can't help you.

70skev, there's a difference between stating opinion on a political leader's decision to go to war, and stating bigoted and prejudiced remarks. And I don't think they messed up a great thing at all - they're bigger and better than ever nowadays, and Taking The Long Way is one of the finest country albums I've ever heard.

70skev wrote:
it is sad that they messed up a great thing just to make jokes, and get political. i wonder if others with other political views said things that were lets say. . . racist or homophobic, would it be acceptable, or attacking muslims or Obama? Not on your life, these same people supporting the chix would be up in arms

'i think she can say what ever she wants about Bush..It's her right..BUT not at a concert that people paid to here her sing..Let her be a politician somewhere else!!!' The comments about Bush were made at a concert in London, not long after we Brits turned out in record numbers for an anti-war march. Why the hell shouldn't she talk about it?
