Carthy’s DJ name was inspired by his trademark loose-lined drawing style. He has been DJing since 1994, at first in and around Manchester then nationwide in the United Kingdom. He is known for DJing in marathon sets (often exceeding six hours), his eclectic musical taste, his love of a “nice cup of tea” and the quirky home-produced visuals and animations that are projected on large screens during his gigs.
His debut album, Mr. Scruff, was released on the small Manchester based label Paradise Records. He soon moved to the larger Ninja Tune label, and subsequently released the albums Keep It Unreal and Trouser Jazz. His most notable hit “
In late 2004 Mr Scruff released the first of what is intended to be a series of 4, DJ-mixed compilation CDs, called Keep It Solid Steel.

Six years after the release of Trouser Jazz today sees the triumphant return of the world champion of fish-related cheekiness! Mr Scruff presents his best album yet, NINJA TUNA, featuring Roots Manuva, Quantic, Alice Russell and others. The Mancunion maestro has kept his album a secret from nearly everyone until now, but now you know its coming you don't need to wait until some achingly distant date in the future, you can download the album from midday TODAY from the Ninja Tune Shop or mrscruff.com or Bleep or iTunes (tomorrow) etc..... Hooray!!!! In two weeks (October 6th) fresh Ninja Tuna CDs will be available in all good record shops in the UK (and soon after around the world), alongside a limited edition beautiful squidgy fish-shaped rubber 2 gigabyte Ninja Tuna USB stick. Mr Scruff is having a whopping great launch party at Matter on Nov 7th, tickets on sale soon.
