The original group comprised singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson’s mental illness, drug addiction and eventual withdrawal from the group; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group.
The Beach Boys officially broke up in 1998 shortly after Carl Wilson’s death, however Mike Love and Bruce Johnston maintain the rights to the name and continue to tour with their own band as The Beach Boys.
===History===
==Early years==
The group was formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California under the leadership of Brian Wilson, and included his brothers Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love and school friend Al Jardine.
The early inspirations of the group were the Wilsons’ musician father, Murry, and the close vocal harmonies of groups such as The Four Freshmen. The group performed initially as The Pendletones, after the Pendleton woolen shirts popular then. Although surfing motifs were very prominent in their early songs, Dennis was the sole actual surfer in the group.

thanks deacon! it's too bad he wasn't interviewed as well.. always nice to hear/see Brian talk :] He looked sorta sad though, but maybe that's just how he looks lately... (also it was nice to see Conan holding the LP up and not a dinky little cd cover)

I've not heard Hard TImes (yet). So, it was recorded in Holland or was it later?

Yes, that would be interesting to know! "Hard Times" rocks, must be a Chaplin/Fataar tune? || @ahayward -- love that avatar with the Pet Sounds LP Thanks for the link, didn't know a site like this even exists!

Question. Why was "Hard Time/s" cut from the Holland album? I am loving this track today.

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,5525.0.html That's the most accurate Beach Boys vocal credits list there is at this point. A lot of people who know what they're talking about went into compiling it. Sometimes they even asked one of the Beach Boys who was singing.

Thanks for that link Ashley. And that was an interesting review Alex.

Wikipedia used to have a great list of Beach Boys songs by singer, where they detailed who was singing each song. Granted, they could be totally wrong on a bunch of them, but it was still a good archive to have on hand. There's a slightly salvaged copy of it here: http://deletionpedia.dbatley.com/w/index.php?title=List_of_Beach_Boys_songs_by_singer_(deleted_04_Sep_2008_at_18:17) Still interesting to me.
