The Who rose to fame in the United Kingdom with a pioneering instrument destruction stage show, as well as a series of top ten hit singles (including the celebrated “My Generation”) and top five albums, beginning in 1965 with “I Can’t Explain”. They first hit the top ten in the USA in 1967 with “I Can See for Miles”. The 1969 release of Tommy was the first in a series of top five albums for the group in the USA, followed by Live at Leeds (1970), Who’s Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973), and Who Are You (1978) among others.
Keith Moon died in 1978. After that the band released two more studio albums, the top five Face Dances (1981) and the top ten It’s Hard (1982), with drummer Kenney Jones, before officially disbanding in 1983. They reformed on several occasions to perform at special events such as Live Aid and for reunion tours such as their 25th anniversary tour (1989) and the Quadrophenia revival tours of 1996 and 1997.

@ Cacophonaut; "Airy pop style" in the beginning? Their first album is more like kick ass R&B/garage rock instead of pop. I wouldn't call My Generation, Anyway anyhow anywhere, The Ox etc. airy pop!

I'm sorry but you just cannot justify that. Towshends lyrics are awkward and juvenile at best, and rarely brilliant. Half the time they are pretty contrived and the rhymes are often extremely basic. The one thing they have going for them is the melodies, (which are admittedly brilliant) but to argue that they are better "because they have balls" just means you like their style better, the power of the melodies (which is what I assume you mean by balls) and the more rock&roll feel to the songs, but seriously, the Beatles never intended such a style, and in the beginning the Who had the same airy pop style as the Beatles did. And their "rock operas" are the terribly boring and pretentious sound of a pop band trying to be taken seriously, which the Beatles did better anyway.

His lyrics are great. I think Townshend had some decent (if pointedly youth-centric) things to say from the very beginning, whereas the Beatles' lyrics always seemed banal to me for their first few albums. Probably just personal preference, but even though I grew up listening to the Beatles, I find the Who easier to relate to.

I have been listening to The Who for quite some time now and liked most of them. But somehow their songs never made any sense to me. Then I read about how their albums Quadrophenia and Tommy were operatic and then when I heard the albums in order, it all fitted in!! Townshend kicks The Beatles' asses with his lyrics alone!!

whichever way you put it, i prefer the charisma and prowness of The Who ! ringo starr is worse than keith moon and harrison mccartney lennon together have been equaled by a single songwriter : pete townshend ! :) dont get me wrong, the beatles are damn right genius, but the who is more soul over substance :)

The Beatles had plenty of "balls" - Top 3 albums: 1) Quadrophania 2) Who's Next then 3) Tommy. Then The Who Sell Out & A Quick One, followed by My Generation and Who Are You.

Reply to richardrw: You're close. The line that you're attributing to Woodstock (Don't cry, don't raise your eye, it's only teenage wasteland) is actually a jab at the mess made at the Isle of Wight festival that they played at.
